چکیده

Multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) production and sales figures are the highest among fine-ceramic products developed in the past 30 years. The total worldwide production and sales reached 550 billion pieces and 6 billion dollars, respectively in 2000. In the course of progress, the development of base-metal electrode (BME) technology played an important role in expanding the application area. In this review, the recent progress in MLCCs with BME nickel (Ni) electrodes is reviewed from the viewpoint of nonreducible dielectric materials. Using intermediate-ionic-size rare-earth ion (Dy2O3, Ho2O3, Er2O3, Y2O3) doped BaTiO3 (ABO3)based dielectrics, highly reliable Ni-MLCCs with a very thin layer below 2μm in thickness have been developed. The effect of site occupancy of rare-earth ions in BaTiO3 on the electrical properties and microstructure of nonreducible dielectrics is studied systematically. It appears that intermediate-ionic-size rare-earth ions occupy both Aand B-sites in the BaTiO3 lattice and effectively control the donor/acceptor dopant ratio and microstructural evolution. The relationship between the electrical properties and the microstructure of Ni-MLCCs is also presented.

Highly Accelerated Lifetesting (halt) of Kemet Base-metal- Electrode (bme) Ceramic Chip Capacitors

The ever-growing price of precious metals has promoted the widespread use of nickel and copper in the internal electrodes and end terminations of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). While these base metal electrode (BME) capacitors are less expensive than capacitors made with palladium and silver/palladium, their unique production process produces an identifiable wear-out mechanism. Highly a...

Modulated and ordered defect structures in electrically degraded Ni–BaTiO3 multilayer ceramic capacitors

Structural defects formed on $111% planes of BaTiO3 during the degradation of high performance multilayer Ni–BaTiO3 X7R ceramic capacitors are studied using transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy ~EELS!. Regular pseudocubic barium titanate grains are present in as-produced ~virginal! base-metal electrode capacitors. However, there is a coexistence of regular, mod...

Failures in Base Metal Electrode (BME) Capacitors

A new failure mechanism has been discovered for today’s latest high volumetric efficiency multilayer chip capacitors. Over the past couple of years, the drive for lower costs has been promoted by the replacement of silver palladium electrodes by nickel. Diligent qualification procedures predicted very long life. However, experience has uncovered an Achilles heel. The capacitors fail when expose...

Thin-film passives in RF/microwave circuits

Until recently, most microwave capacitors were based on fired multilayer ceramic technology. In this process, layers of highly conductive electrode metal alloys are interleaved with low-loss ceramic dielectrics in a multilayer fashion until the target capacitance is obtained. The resulting stack is then sintered into a monolithic structure in a high-temperature firing process. This process cont...
